Port80 was founded in 1995 as a web development company, creating and leading the initial web business strategies of brands as diverse as English National Ballet, Apple Education, Lotus Cars and Toshiba Europe.
In 1999 we moved away from our programming roots and became the first independent business consultancy in Europe to focus on the emerging field of multichannel retail, combining an understanding of web-enabled technology with knowledge of traditional retail businesses. Having offered online business planning and strategic advice to High Street retail brands, we focused on the increasing need for strict data privacy and security in the connected world. Since the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards were defined in 2004, we have taken some of the world's leading retailers and payment service providers from first steps through to full PCI DSS compliance at the strictest level and we continue to advise them on security auditing procedures.
In 2008 we began working with Palmer and Harvey, the UK's largest delivered wholesaler of grocery items, chilled and frozen foods, tobacco and alcohol, and health and home products to a diverse range of retail outlets. Our close relationship has enabled us to learn about the specialist market of convenience retail and to apply our knowledge, experience and theories to not only help bring P&H's technology vision to life but also to increase sales to their convenience retail customers and make it faster and easier for them to restock their stores.
Intelligent software will learn about individuals and the behaviour of large populations to the extent that it can accurately predict what, where and how people are going to buy products even before the individuals know it themselves.
Today we are leading research into artificially intelligent systems that analyse vast quantities of data in real-time. By gathering and combining unprecedented levels of insight about individuals as they use technology with the collective actions and opinions of many thousands of people, we are creating software that learns and models likely future behaviour. By adding knowledge of external influences such as seasonal trends, local events or weather patterns, the systems predict behaviour ever more accurately with time.
When you know everything that influences an individual's purchasing decisions and adapt the ways you communicate to each person, it becomes easier to attract that person with particular pricing or promotions, and to direct each individual towards additional products – and to return for more later.
